An electronic book (e-book) is a book that can be read on your computer, laptop or using a hand-held device, such as a cell phone or PDA. Currently, Amira Press offers four formats for e-book distribution--PDF, HTML, LIT, and MobiPocket. Below is a brief explanation of these file types.

PDF - Adobe Reader (PDF) is a file type that can be read on any platform, whether you have a PC or a Mac. It can also be converted to be read on MobiPocket. To download the free software, click here.

HTML - This file type can be read on your computer screen, laptop or can be converted to be read on MobiPocket. HTML can also be read from any web browser.

LIT - This file type is for Microsoft Reader.

MobiPocket (PRC) - This format can be read from your cell phone or from your PDA. To download the free software, please click here.



Do you have a Kindle?

You can purchase and wirelessly download Kindle books, newspapers, magazines and blogs from the Kindle Store as well as download and read other types of non-DRM text-based content on your Kindle. When your Kindle is connected to a computer and mounted as a USB drive, you will see three default directories or folders. Here's a list of the directories and the file types recognized by Kindle:

• Documents: Kindle (.AZW, .AZW1). Text (.TXT), Unprotected Mobipocket (.MOBI, .PRC)

Tip: Mobipocket files must have no Digital Rights Management (DRM) protection applied to be readable on your Kindle. If you purchased a Mobipocket file from a Mobipocket retailer, you will not be able to open the file on your Kindle. 

Amira Press Mobi formats are not protected with DRM, so it should work according to Amazon’s help pages.

One reason to buy an e-book is the fact that it costs considerably less to produce an electronic file, therefore the savings are passed on directly to the reader. The savings between a paperback novel and an e-book can be as much as 75%. That reason alone would be enough to begin purchasing them, but that's not the only plus.

E-books take up much less room. A bookshelf can be quickly filled with paperback novels, until the reader is forced to throw out old favorites. With e-books, this need not be the case. A PC or Mac can hold as much as a reader's hard drive allows. Hand-held devices can also store e-books.

Finally, a good reason to buy e-books is that there is no need to wait for delivery. You don't need to watch the mailbox everyday. You can purchase and download your product instantly. In this day and age, that benefit has become much more expected and e-books deliver.
